Located between forested hills and the confluence of three rivers, Missoula blends small-city energy with immediate access to the outdoors. It’s a place where arts, culture, food and recreation all converge—creating a vibrant community that’s easy to explore and even easier to love. If you’re planning a weekend getaway, Missoula offers a thoughtful balance of urban experiences and time outside.

Below is a guide to help you make the most of two days in the Garden City.

A kayaker surfs Brennan’s Wave in downtown Missoula.

SATURDAY: MARKETS, DOWNTOWN STROLLS AND RIVERFRONT VIEWS

Start with local coffee. Ease into the morning with a cup from Break Espresso, a longtime Missoula favorite known for its pies and pastries.

Explore the farmers market. From May through October, the Missoula Farmers Market and Missoula People’s Market set up just steps away. Browse fresh produce, locally roasted coffee, baked goods, flowers and handmade goods.

Wander Downtown Missoula. Spend time exploring local shops and galleries—like Zara Gallery, Dana Gallery, 4 Ravens and The Montana Scene—if you’re ready for ice cream, cool off with a scoop at Sweet Peaks, known for handmade Montana-inspired ice cream flavors. Then you’re on your way to Beartracks Bridge and into Caras Park.

Browse the Clark Fork Market. Another stop-worthy outdoor market, the Clark Fork Market highlights regional growers, makers and bakers. Arrive hungry—there is no shortage of local-food favorites, like empanadas and waffle sandwiches.

Experience the riverfront. While in Caras Park, take a spin on A Carousel for Missoula, then head to the river’s edge to watch surfers and kayakers ride Brennan’s Wave, a popular in-town whitewater feature.

Explore the Hip Strip. Wander across Beartracks Bridge and check out Missoula’s Hip Strip, with stops like Big Dipper (more local ice cream), Shakespeare & Co. book store and Bernice’s Bakery.

Try a scoop of huckleberry or treat yourself to a sundae at Big Dipper Ice Cream.

Evening food and music. Stop into the Top Hat or Finn (great riverfront views) for appetizers and refreshments, then enjoy a locally crafted beer at Cranky Sam Public House. When dinner calls, Wally & Buck offers grass-fed smashburgers.

If your evening still has room for activity, check the event calendars at The Wilma, Top Hat or the KettleHouse Amphitheater—Missoula’s live music scene is active year-round.

Rest for tomorrow’s adventure. Choose from a variety of lodging options around the city, each offering welcoming hospitality and easy access to the next day’s plans.

SUNDAY: TRAIL TIME, LOCAL EATS AND COMMUNITY CULTUR

Begin with brunch. Enjoy a hearty breakfast at The Old Post, known for its welcoming atmosphere and Montana-inspired fare.

Head to the mountains. Just minutes from town, Montana Snowbowl offers year-round recreation. In summer and fall, you can hike high-mountain trails, explore by bike or try the zip line. While you’re there, stop in for lunch—Snowbowl’s wood-fired pizza and signature bloody marys have a loyal following.

Learn about wildlife habitat conservation or wildland firefighting. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Visitor Center. Interactive exhibits, nature trails and interpretive displays make it engaging for all ages. The Smokejumper Visitor Center is also a noteworthy stop, with exhibits, gear displays and seasonal tours offering a behind-the-scenes look at this critical work.

Settle in for a movie at The Roxy. Back downtown, the historic Roxy Theater showcases independent films, community screenings and classics. Enjoy organic popcorn and adult beverages as you unwind from the day.
