With more than 1 million acres of rugged peaks, alpine lakes, cascading waterfalls and wildflower-filled meadows, Glacier National Park in Western Montana offers endless opportunities for exploration.
The park’s vast landscape can feel overwhelming at first, but there are many ways to experience its beauty at a slower pace. From guided excursions to scenic tours, these experiences offer an approachable introduction to the park while helping visitors connect more deeply with its natural and cultural heritage.
RIDE THE HISTORIC RED BUSES
A ride aboard the park’s historic Red Buses is one of the most iconic ways to see Glacier. Originally built in the 1930s, the restored touring vehicles feature roll-back canvas tops that open to expansive mountain views along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Knowledgeable guides share stories about the park’s history, geology and wildlife while navigating the winding alpine route, allowing visitors to relax and take in the scenery without the stress of driving.
DISCOVER GLACIER THROUGH SUN TOURS
Experience Glacier through the perspective of the Blackfeet Nation with Sun Tours, the only Indigenous-owned tour company operating inside the park. Guided by knowledgeable local interpreters, these tours offer meaningful insight into the cultural significance of the landscape, along with stories and traditions connected to the region. Half-day and full-day tour options are available on both the east and west sides of the park.
EXPLORE THE TRAILS WITH A GUIDE
With more than 734 miles of trails, Glacier offers hiking opportunities for a wide range of interests and abilities. Joining a guided hike can provide a deeper understanding of the park’s ecosystems, wildlife and history while offering additional peace of mind on the trail. Sign up for the free hikes guided by park rangers; check the Ranger-Led Activities schedule. Businesses like Glacier Guides and Glacier Institute offer guided excursions and educational programs throughout the park.
SEE THE PARK FROM THE WATER
For a different perspective, step aboard a scenic tour with Glacier Park Boat Company. Guided boat tours on lakes, including St. Mary Lake, Lake McDonald, Many Glacier and Two Medicine, reveal sweeping views of Glacier’s dramatic peaks and forested shorelines. Many tours also include opportunities to explore trails and historic areas along the lakeshore, creating a memorable way to experience the park at a relaxed pace.
