Tucked between the Mission and Swan mountains, the Seeley-Swan Valley offers some of Western Montana’s most peaceful water adventures. Among them, the Clearwater Canoe Trail stands out as a must-experience journey for anyone seeking calm waters, abundant wildlife and the quiet beauty of a protected waterway.

This gentle, winding stretch of the Clearwater River is reserved for nonmotorized boats, creating a serene escape ideal for paddlers of all experience levels. The route typically takes about two hours, meandering through lush wetlands before flowing into the north end of Seeley Lake. Along the way, you might spot white-tailed deer, painted turtles and a variety of bird species.

Visitors can bring their own canoe or kayak or rent one locally. Tamaracks Resort offers convenient canoe and kayak rentals as well as a shuttle to drop you off at the put in.

Before setting out, remember to pack out what you pack in, avoid disturbing wildlife, and give yourself time to simply float, listen and take in the view.

The Clearwater Canoe Trail weaves its way though wetlands before emptying into Seeley Lake.

Please note: We ask that all our visitors and residents recreate responsibly by being mindful of the following: know before you go; plan ahead; play it safe; leave no trace; tread lightly; and help build an inclusive outdoors.
