Mount Sentinel’s “M” Trail is one of Missoula’s most iconic hikes—and for good reason. Easily accessible from the University of Montana campus, the trail offers a short but rewarding climb with panoramic views of the city, valley and surrounding mountains.
The hike covers about three-quarters of a mile with a steady incline and 11 switchbacks. While it’s a moderate workout, the trail attracts hikers of all skill levels, with benches to pause, rest or let others pass.
At the top, the large concrete “M” marks your arrival and the perfect spot to take in the views, snap a few photos or simply catch your breath.

Please note: We ask that all our visitors and residents recreate responsibly by being mindful of the following: know before you go; plan ahead; play it safe; leave no trace; tread lightly; and help build an inclusive outdoors.
