Winter is our most magical season in Western Montana, and it’s picture perfect from every angle. A treasure trove of idyllic places and activities can be found here. From exploring a ghost town by snowshoe to riding horseback at a world-class resort, come find your instagram-worthy Montana moment.
Get the shot: Only accessible by snowmobile, Nordic ski and snowshoe, Garnet Ghost Town is a hidden gem in the winter. Located about 30 minutes east of Missoula, this well-preserved ghost town offers a glimpse of mining and homesteader life in the Old West. Stay overnight in a primitive cabin in Garnet, only available during the winter.
Get the shot: Discover the grandeur of Glacier National Park in the winter—it’s one of the best times to visit the Crown of the Continent. Crowds are nonexistent, the Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed to vehicles but open to snowshoeing and Nordic skiing, and you’re likely to spot some wildlife.
Tag responsibly: To keep the experience of discovery alive, while taking photos inside Glacier National Park please do not tag specific locations, instead tag the location simply as Glacier National Park.
Get the shot: Base Camp Bigfork is ready to help you mush a team of snow-loving Inuit sled dogs through alpine forests and sweeping mountain meadows in Bigfork. No previous experience is needed, so sit back in the sled as a passenger, or take the lead as a musher—this wildly fun activity is great from every angle.
Get the shot: Saddle up for adventure at The Resort at Paws Up in the Blackfoot Corridor. Plan an all-inclusive stay at this luxury resort. When you’re not taking in views from the hot tub, you’ll be horseback riding, skijoring and snowmobiling.
Get the shot: Without a doubt this will be one of the most soothing photo spots yet! Soak in the healing mineral water at Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort outside Paradise. Overnight in one of their rustic cabins on the banks of the Clark Fork River and dine on-site at the restaurant or bar.
Get the shot: A few miles north of the Old West town of Darby is one of our best-kept secrets, Lake Como. Surrounded by mountains, the lake is breathtaking. Take in the views from the parking lot, or snowshoe along the lake.
Get the shot: This legendary barn sits at the base of the Mission Mountains, serving up an incredible view. We’re not the only ones who think so—it’s one of the most photographed barns in Montana. Find it outside Ronan off U.S. Highway 93; make sure to respect private property lines and bring a zoom lens to get an up-close image.
Get the shot: Whitefish Mountain Resort was recently voted the No. 3 Best Ski Resort in the West by SKI magazine readers and boasts 3,000+ acres of skiable terrain. Ride to the summit for awe-inspiring views of Glacier National Park and the Flathead Valley, and get a shot of the famous snow ghosts.
